Since 2000, the theme of my work has been the subject of commercial plastic containers used in packaging such things as detergent, fruit juice, mouthwash, etc. The main thrust of my investigations has been the quality of light filtered through transparent and translucent plastic materials. My role in art has evolved into the ordinary, utilitarian yet contemporary objects using the traditional European painting methods. Some of the influences that have energized my work over the years have been Dutch painter Johannes Vermeer (1632-1675), Spanish painter Diego Valezquez (1599-1660), French painter Jean-Baptiste-Siméon Chardin (1699-1779), Italian painter Giorgio Morandi (1890-1964), etc.
I became conscious of these plastic containers due to their sheer numbers passing from household use to the waste recycling box month after month, year after year. I felt the need to paint these objects because of the wide variety of shapes, sizes and colors. I hope, through my struggle with the painting process, that I have shown some of the joy, pleasure, beauty and grace that these humble objects have given me.
